Aurora—(February 25, 2008) The art selection committee for the Art in Public Places project at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora has chosen seven artists to create and place artwork throughout the campus within the next year. The public art will be dedicated to healing as well as creating a more humane environment of distinction, enjoyment and pride for students, staff and patients.
The call for entry was sent to artists across the country to submit their images and statement of interest. The opportunities for public art included “The Big Picture” which will connect the education and research zones, two atriums which will be filled with art and “Surprises” which will be small, intimate pieces of art reserved exclusively for Colorado artists. The call for entry attracted 176 artists and the committee chose 87 for discussion. From this selection, 20 artists were invited to the campus to tour the facilities and grounds and develop a design proposal. From this group of 20, the committee then selected seven artists to produce artwork for the campus.

The Anschutz Medical campus is designed for health care delivery of the future and strives to educate the best health professionals, provide superior health care and community service, and be at the forefront of knowledge advancement through research in health sciences. The $1.2 million budget for these projects comes from six Certificates of Participation Projects (COPs) funded by $202.9 million in state capital construction funds. COPs are tax exempt government securities that, by law, require one percent to be set aside for public art in and/or adjacent to these facilities. These public art funds are administered by the Colorado Council on the Arts.
A collection of artwork from the former University of Colorado Denver Ninth Avenue campus, including contemporary pieces, historical pieces, donations and memorabilia, also will be transferred to the Anschutz Medical Campus.
