“Opening Doors” By Christopher Weed
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center
Fitzsimons, Education Facility 1-A
Christopher Weed created the sculpture “Opening Doors”
with three goals in mind. First and foremost was to create pieces that
were large enough to stand on their own, all the while not detracting
from the surrounding architecture. Secondly, the sculptures would have
to draw a connection between the educational and research mission of
the facility. Lastly they would be colorful, thoughtful, and humorous,
adding visual relief from the intensities of the activities from within
its academic wall.
As the title suggest “Opening Doors” is all about the doors
that are opened in our sub conscious when we dare to challenge ourselves
through higher education. The promise of science has also led to the
opening of doors to exciting new discoveries in the biomedical field,
unlocking the answers to many diseases. The connection between the education
and research mission is evident when viewing these playful, create,
and thought provoking sculptures.
The sculpture is constructed entirely of powder-coated steel. The three
doors are approximately 16.5’ high x 7.5’ wide x 3.25"
deep.
Dedicated in 2006, this is one of the many pieces of art that will
be placed on the Fitzsimons campus over the next several years. CCA
will manage ten projects throughout the state in 2007. To learn more
about the public art opportunities, watch the CCA website and artists
should make sure they are registered on artistsregistry.com.
