Colcha Embroidery
Colchas are embroidered textiles that are made with a special type of stitch and depict scenes and images. Descriptions of the history of the tradition and of the uses of the colchas help students learn how art grows out of cultural experience. Colcha thrives in Colorado’s San Luis Valley and reflects the memories of cultures, communities and individuals. A literacy component explores legends depicted in the embroidery. Students are encouraged to think about embroidery traditions of other cultures, look at contemporary examples, discuss the stories they depict, create one-act plays and think about political and cultural implications. Step-by-step instructions for designing and making colchas are complemented by discussion topics and questions. Activities address standards in math, history, reading, writing and visual arts for various grade levels. Pre-Assessment and Instructional Strategies are included. Related readings on Latino/Mexican cultural information are included in several different parts of Section IV: Resources.
