Exploring Cowboy Life Through Cowboy Poetry

Teachers will find many educational (and fun!) ways to introduce ranching and cowboy life to their students. Activities include ideas on planning a Western Week at school, taking a field trip to a local ranch, and brainstorming about the kinds of jobs cowboys do in their everyday work. A section on cowboy vocabulary looks at the occupational language cowboys use. Several poems are included along with study questions to help guide a discussion of the art form, the occupation and its place in our culture. Teachers will find ideas on addressing specific history and geography content standards through studying cowboy life and cowboy poetry. A wide array of Cowboy/Agriculture/Ranching Resources in Colorado is listed in Section IV: Resources.
