Hmong Cultures
The author of this section is a Hmong refugee, anthropologist, and long-time Denver resident. Her personal experience and scholarly knowledge offer a fascinating opportunity to learn first-hand from a member of the Hmong culture. Over at least 4,000 years, the culture has changed and survived. Throughout the United States today, Hmong people hold onto their traditions, such as their language that is unrelated to any other known language, their special musical instruments, and songs that are passed on from generation to generation. Migration patterns and immigration trends, environmental adaptation and food traditions come alive through the art and stories of the Hmong and students learn about the relationship between politics, economics, war and culture. An activity guide explores many topics related to culture and community. Section IV: Resources contains a wealth of resource information on Hmong culture as well as links to other video resources and lesson plans.
