Latino Cultures
This unit directs teachers to the many “Ties That Bind” audio, video and written resources that showcase Latino culture. Definitions of different terms, including “Latino,” “Hispanic,” “Hispanos,” “Mestizos” and “American” are explored, and the geographic distribution of groups pointed out. Student activities include studying places on a globe, exploring languages, history, names, locations of populations, and migrant workers. Historical studies focus on many different countries including United States, Spain and Mexico. Suggestions are made for addressing specific standards in language arts, art, math, science, music and dance by studying legends, naming traditions, saints day celebrations, family traditions, santero wood carving, weaving, embroidery, stories, songs, musical instruments, and folk dances. Section IV: Resources, contains recommended readings as well as folk dance and Latino resources in Colorado, and references to additional lesson plans.
