St. Patrick's Day and the Irish
Unit Goals include learning why the holiday is celebrated, what ethnic heritage is, and some characteristics of Irish culture. Observational skills are used to help students recognize ethnic cultures. Day One activities include setting the stage through a guided conversation about St. Patrick’s Day parades. Students also participate in a drawing project, listen to Irish music, study geography by examining globes and maps and watch a portion of the film “The Secret of Roan Inish.” Day two completes the unit with group discussion and a drama project. Also included is and Teachers’ Resource Pages on Irish Americans and their culture. Section IV: Resources features a detailed list of Irish Resources in Colorado.
