Quilts Across Cultures

Background information explores the art of quiltmaking from ancient Egyptian times, through several historical eras, and in today’s world. The uses and meanings of quilts, including their roles in different cultures such as African American and Native American, are discussed. A special section comparing types of needlework relates to the lesson plan on Hmong culture. Classroom activities include discussion, drama and writing projects to help student learn about quilts of many cultures, to consider their social and political implications and to explore the stories quilts and quiltmakers tell. Instructions guide teachers through helping students make a quilt while addressing specific standards in history, reading, writing, visual arts and math. Pre-Assessment of existing knowledge and Instructional Strategies are included. There is also a comprehensive list of resources in Section IV: Resources.
