Wheat Weaving
Hands-on activities help students of three different age groups (K-4, 4-7, 8-12) explore the process and products of wheat weaving. Students look at samples of the art form, learn about the raw materials, and discuss issues relevant to content standards. Step-by-step instructions help teachers guide students through the process of making their own works of art. Background information explores the history of this ancient craft, of agriculture and of the use of symbols. Teachers and students learn what impact the threshing machine had on the art form, where its recent revival took place, what types of items are made from grain, how they are used and what they mean. Pre-assessment information and instructional strategies are included. Excellent internet resources are contained in Section IV: Resources.
