Passage

Budget: $153,000

Ken Bernstein’s Passage is a series of five steel gateways located along the path from the Student Recreation Center to the HPER Building. Typically a gateway, an architectural feature that signifies a transition from one space to another, leads into an enclosed space. This piece leads one along a path in open air, instead, while still evoking a monumental presence. It is the artist’s hope that walking through the gateways will evoke spiritually ephemeral feelings, including freedom and unbound possibility. Several groupings of stone are used as seating areas throughout this piece, as the gateways are reminiscent of the goals in several sports. Thus, the piece is an appropriate pathway for a sports complex.
