This two year program in Horse Training Management is Lamar Community College’s signature associate degree program. Drawing upon the vitality of local agricultural life and the national horse industry, the program develops graduates who can break and train a horse. Breeder’s board their un-broke or green broken horses with the college for one semester during which students train the horses, exhibit the training in a horse show and master the art and craft of training and caring for horses. Unique in the United States for its ‘hands-on’ approach, HTM prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities in the nation’s thriving horse industry.
The artwork has three parts which talk about the history of Lamar and the college as well as the horse training program. The foreground includes a stone building and rocks made of clay, a petroglyph of a horse and a variety of landscape elements. The middle ground includes the first school and a student with a young horse. The background includes a big dust cloud, several low relief painted cutouts of horses and riders superimposed over the while piece. The imagery incorporates the personal growth and education of the students. |
